According to a new survey, many motorists in the UK would struggle to pay their bills if they damaged their car. The poll conducted by Warranty Direct, found that 53% of drivers would not easily be able to afford the average car repair bill of £273, due to the ongoing recession.

Nearly three quarters (72%) of respondents said that they would be lost without their motors, but the online car insurance provider calculated that around five million UK drivers would not be able to stump up any cash to keep their car on road.

Warranty Direct’s Duncan McClure Fisher said “This is worrying – some are just burying their heads in the sand.” He also added that not servicing a car may help motorists in the short run but, “Eventually it is going to need work doing on it and you’re only increasing the likelihood that it’s going to be very expensive repair job”.

Drivers who want to buy car insurance online may want to try and save money by paying to reduce the excess and checking if the policy includes breakdown cover.

Supermarket.com can reveal that drivers keen to take out car insurance policies for electric vehicles (EV) may support calls from one company for the government to offer financial incentives to such motorists sooner or later.

GoinGreen- The firm responsible for the Reva G-Wiz model expressed disappointment that grants towards the purchase of this type of eco-friendly auto would not be made available until 2011. The department of Transport recently announced that the motorists would be eligible for up to £5,000 to help them buy an electric car.

According to GoinGreen, if the country’s leaders want to encourage emission-free motoring, it cannot afford to delay such measures. However, it will take more than a year for such financial incentives to be put in place.

Motorists who do not want to wait to buy an electric car may find they can reduce their costs by searching for cheap car insurance quotes online.

In other news, a UK car scrappage scheme has now been revealed and will be put into action next month.
