It has been claimed that the car scrappage scheme launched this week has “caught the imagination of the car buying public”. According to Hyundai, the initiative has resulted in some surprising trade-offs.
It explained since the launch of the programme, its dealers have seen customers looking to scrap Mercedes, Audis and BMWs. One retailer reported seeing a Jaguar XJ-S being disposed of, while the previous owner drove away in new i10.
The company stated many workers who have taken part in this scheme have never bought a brand new auto before. Managing director, Tony Whitehorn commented that “Some people look a little embarrassed when they turn up at a showroom with an old car which is literally falling to pieces”. However he added that Hyundai will happily accept anything that meets government criteria.
By getting rid of a large model in favour of something more diminutive like the Hyundai i10, motorists may well find they make savings at the pump and on cheap car insurance.
